KMess announcement: KMess is switching to Tcl/Tk

Postby Sjors » April 1st, 2009, 12:47 pm

Hello all,

I was given the awesome honor to make an amazing announcement on behalf of the rest of the KMess team: We are going to switch to Tcl/Tk!
For this, KMess is now going back into Alpha. Once KMess is completely rewritten in Tcl/Tk, we will release beta 2 of KMess 2.0.

Example of the great design we will also get!!!!

We believe that switching to Tcl/Tk will enable us to beautify our design (see the image above), and make our code more maintainable. Also, we will be able to interface with aMSN plugins! See below for an example of an example of the AMAZING functionality we will gain!

Image
GREAT! We will also be able to make our friends hate us!!!!!!!!!!!!111

I would like to announce a name change too. Since the K in KMess stood for some stupid library so irrelevant compared to our new solution, we are changing names to TMess (AKA Total Mess)!

Hopefully you will all be as glad as we are about this :D

You should also create a new desktop environment, called TDE (Total Desktop Environmet), otherwise TMess will shine alone and will eclipse other apps.
Then we'll be able to keep on saying that the strength of TMess is its integration with the desktop environment.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

What? Joke? What do you mean?

Yes, sorry, you will not be able to build it for the coming days as we rewrite the source to Tcl/Tk. Thank you for your patience! (in the meantime, feel somewhat free to use the inferior KDE libraries with revision 4494...)

Hello. I created a patch that implements most missing features for Tcl/Tk.

http://foss.math.aegean.gr/~realnc/kmes ... .patch.bz2

It is against revision 4497. I did not rename it to TMess in order not break anything in SVN.

Please test. Feedback is welcome.

Thanks! I'm testing your patch now, it seems to be working OK. And how beautiful it is! It's almost like you worked on this for a few days instead of just one day :| Great work! Thanks so much!

Okay! The port is getting close! We, as the KMess team, in collaboration with Swiftscythe and RealNC, have made a test version of TMess! The first release will be available soon! Swiftscythe made a screencast of the new TMess build so you can all see how *amazing* it looks. I am really happy about the switch to TclTk! Make sure to check out the code once we get a release through!
